This week I was watching the history channel and there was a show about Women’s roles in the World Wars. Prior to the First World War women’s role in society in western countries was generally confined to the domestic sphere, but not necessarily their own home. While some women managed to receive a tertiary education and others to go into non-traditional career paths, for the most part women were expected to be primarily involved in “duties at home” and “women’s work”. More than any previous wars, World Wars I and II hinged as much on industrial production as they did on battlefield clashes. With millions of men away fighting and with the inevitable horrendous casualties, there was a severe shortage of labour in a range of industries, from rural and farm work to city office jobs. During both World War though women became more involved in the military during World War II, they were not treated equally to men. Many commanding officers purposefully kept women out of combat. There were also cases in which men falsely accused women of promiscuity, although there were more cases where promiscuity was a factor.ar I and World War II, women were called on, by necessity, to do work and to take on roles that were outside their traditional gender expectations. In Great Britain this was known as a process of “Dilution” and was strongly contested by the trade unions, particularly in the engineering and ship building industries. Women did, for the duration of both World Wars, take on jobs that were traditionally regarded as skilled “men’s work”. However, in accordance with the agreement negotiated with the trade unions, women undertaking jobs covered by the Dilution agreement lost their jobs at the end of the First World War.

This weeks readings really make you think about how things use to be and how thing are in different cultures around the world. To think that people once married mostly for financial stability, not because they were in love with each other. It is somewhat like arranged marriage, some cultures embrace the arranged marriages. Many people have some form of an arranged marriage and do not even realize it. Couples are set up together all the time friends setting up friends, blind dates seem to happen a lot more especially now since there online dating services everywhere. Times have definitely changed, most people I know get married for love not any other reasons. I do find it funny how things have changed, men are not the strong financial figure today like they were 70 years ago. I know a couple married couples that have role reversed relationships. They both have husbands that do not work while they work and provide all of the financial stability in the household. Stay at home dad’s are becoming more common, especially since more women are becoming more independent and more successful in their careers. Women discovering themselves and figuring out they do not have to depend on a man to take care of them has a strong influence in many cultures today. I think the days of men being more superior then women are coming to an end especially once more women figure out that they are equal to men. Equality between men and women is very close to actually happening, strong women just need to stick together.

I can not really think of much to write this week. I on vacation this week so I have not done much, just things around the house. The interesting thing I have done is reading those article for this class. All I can say is WOW! Some of those articles were unbelievable. They really did make me think about women’s health, and how broken the healthcare system in this country is. Every time I read one of the articles I would look at my husband and say “Can you believe this.” The article about the abortion demonstrations was so typical. There are always those people out there that think that they are fighting a cause for the greater good like being pro-life, but never thinking through the cause in its entirety. Like they all think that abortion should be illegal, but what kind of penalty should be imposed for people who break that law. Most of them did not know. Say there is a teenage girl who is raped, she is still a child herself and does not have the means to take care of a child. So she can either have an abortion or she can have the child and put it up for adoption. The child will go to foster care if no one wants to adopt them. The child will have no quality life , they will be bounced around from foster home to foster home until they are 18. What kind of life is that? Not saying that abortion is right or wrong, but people need to think these issue through fully before they make a stand for some them.

I was watching television the other night, you may have noticed a lot of my blogs are about television show or commercials I have seen. Watching television is the only me time I have to unwind and decompress from a usually hectic day at work. Some of you may have seen this commercial it is by Dove. It starts out with a girl probably about 10 years old standing on a sidewalk. In fast motion they flash all of these billboards in front of her of swimsuit models, lingerie models, supermodels, dieting, ect. The next frame of the commercial shows the girl sitting on a coach watching a cheerleader on television looking really depressed, it is truly a sad image. The caption on the screen say, “Girls are under more pressure now than ever.” Dove is going the extra steps to help girls with their self-esteem through a workshop. These workshops have been created to help girls realize that they are beautiful even if they are not supermodels. These groups also give girls the opportunity to work with other girls and women to show them they are not alone, there is always someone there for you. As of right now 2 million average girls have begun to see themselves as beautiful. Dove has always been a big supporter of women and making them feel beautiful. The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty was launched to serve as a starting point for societal changes to widen the definition and discussion of beauty. Dove’s mission: to make more women to feel beautiful everyday by widening stereotypical views of beauty.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been experiencing somethings that I feel is related to this course. Recently at my workplace I got a new manager. This person is a white male in his early to mid 50′s. As many people may know it is always an adjustment when a new person joins your staff at the workplace. This individual has a very bold, strict personality (it is either his way or no way), which I can only guess comes from his military background. He has come into the workplace and made many unnecessary changes and some necessary ones. It not about the changes he is making, but it is about the approach he takes to make these changes. The staff at my workplace is all women, I am sure he has some of his own challenges during with an office full women. He is a very unemphatic person, one of the employees who works there has a 2 year son. The other day he came up to her and said, ” You need to work this weekend to make up some hours that you missed from the previous week.” She said, “I can not work this weekend I do not have a babysitter for my son.” He said, “That is not my problem you need to figure it out and be here.” As you can imagine this was very upsetting to her. There was another instance when he said to another employee, “Do I need to send you home so you an sit on the coach and eat some bon bon’s and think about what I have said to you.” You have to wonder if the employee was a male would those kind of comments be made. I hate to say it, but I think not.

On Monday I watched the movie Grand Torino. I would definitely recommend watching it. This movie was not what I expected. It is about a Korean War veteran and a retired automotive worker who does not like how his life has turned out especially now that his wife has passed away. He is also very unhappy about how the neighborhood he lives in has demolished. He especially does not like the people who live next door, Hmong immigrants from Southeast Asia. But certain things that are going on in the neighborhood is forcing him to defend his neighbors against a local gang that feeds on violence and fear.

The reason this movie cames to mind when I was thinking about this assignment is because of all the racist and sexist slander that takes place during the movie. Throughout the movie the main character refers to his neighbors in racist terms. Even once he becomes friends with them, realizes that his has a lot in common with them, and actually likes them he continuously calls them racist names. There is a scene where the neighbor boy is outside doing gardening work. The main character ask the boy why are you doing women’s work, and calls him a sissy. There is another scene where the local gang members kidnap the neighbor girl and beat her up and rape her because her brother won’t join their gang. One of the funniest scenes in the movie to me is when the main character takes the neighbor boy into a barber shop to teach him how to talk like a man.

As you can see even though I given just a very brief summary about this movie, there are many racist and sexist things that occur basically through the whole movie.

Earlier today I was watching a television show during my lunch break which reminded me about this class. After reading the section titled “Tired of Playing Monopoly?” This section of the chapter talked about classes in society and where and how women play a part in it. It covers how women in lower working classes don’t have the advantages in education, jobs, and mothering like women of middle-upper class up bring.

The show I saw today was about a women who was raised in an upper class family were she could have anything that she wanted. After living this priviledge lifestyle for 16 years she decide to leaving it. She left her parents, moved out on her own and became pregnant. For the next 16 years of her life she raised her child on her own, worked hard like a lower class working woman would. She worked her way up to a position as a manager at a hotel. Once her daughter was in school she to decided to go back to school to get her degree on her own at a community college even though she could have had a higher education through an ivy league school if she would have stay with her upper class parents. Once her daughter was in high school she realized that she want a better life for her daughter because she had experienced a life of struggling. So she asked her parents for help not for herself, but for her daughter. They agreed to pay for her daughter to go to a private school to get her the best education possible because she was a gift girl when it came to being smart. Once she graduated high school she attend Harvard. The woman finally felt completely accomplished. She gave her parent the daughter that they never had with her daughter. And she gave her daughter the life that she could have had.
